About the Flakes, Blobs and Bubbles Activity
Flakes, Blobs and Bubbles Ice Core Art project generated during the Fall 2012 International Polar Week!
|
Welcome to the Flakes, Blobs, Bubbles: An Ice Core Art Project webpage! After calls for polar-related activities went out to the Polar Educators International (PEI) community, the PEI Polar Week committee chose the Flakes, Blobs and Bubbles activity as the flagship educational activity for the Fall 2012 International Polar Week. This activity was developed by Dr. Heidi A. Roop & Dr. Dan Zwartz at Victoria University of Wellington.
This activity is currently part of the 2016 March International Polar Week (see below and here for more information). The main goal of this activity is to explore how ice sheets and glaciers form and to learn about why and how scientists study ice. As students learn about ice formation, they will also be creating 'ice' art. In 2012, we collected drawings from around the world and integrated it into a global ice core (see an example photo to the left). Thank you to members of APECS translated this activity into several languages so we could create a truly global ice core! If you'd like to use this activity now, please see the 'Activity for Download' page. To see images that were submitted as part of the Fall 2012 International Polar Week, please visit the Gallery. Stay tuned for updates following the next IPW in March, 2016! |
